  • Albert Ward, of Big Hole Tract, passed away peacefully at his residence, on Saturday, February 13, 2021, at the age of 80.

Born in Eel Ground (Natoaganeg), he was the son of the late Alexander and Mary (Matthew) Ward. He worked various jobs during his lifetime, but was most known as a highly respected spiritual Elder. Albert traveled all across Turtle Island, learning from those he met along the way and sharing teachings to those who were eager to listen.

He was passionate about bringing people together in ceremony, sharing stories, songs, and a few good jokes, and ran his own sweat lodge for as long as he could. Albert lived his life on his terms and as his health began to decline, he was determined to be home and continued to teach and share his knowledge with visitors and often prayed for the people. “Don’t be scared, speak from the heart, it’s your medicine.”

He will be greatly missed by his two sons Joseph Leonard Ward and Wayne Ward; five daughters Wanda Ward, Stephanie Ward, Colleen Ward, Rebecca Vicaire, Shannon Barnaby; four brothers Joseph Ward, Wilfred Ward, Anthony Ward, and Raymond Ward; five sisters Philomene Ward, Mary Jane Simonson, Barbara Isaac, Mary Ann Ward, and Lucy Martin; 18 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his four brothers Thomas Ward, Patrick Ward, Freeman Ward, and John Ward; one sister Irene Paul, one daughter Barbara Ward, and one grandson Craig Ward.

Due to Covid-19, a private memorial will take place at his residence on Wednesday, February 17, 2021. A public celebration of life will take place later in the spring.

As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to a memorial of one's choice.
