It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bettina (Betty) J. Whalen, widow of the late John (Jack) F. G. Whalen of Miramichi, on April 2, 2020. Born June 12, 1925, Betty was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mum lived a very full life and lived it “her way”. She spent her early years working with Jack to build a successful road construction business. Mum was always ready to share any new adventure with him on the spur of the moment. They spent many happy years travelling together. Her love of family knew no bounds. Mum had a very special place in her heart for her granddaughter, Victoria. She took great joy in following Victoria’s love of dance, a passion now enjoyed by her great granddaughters. She watched with great pride as “her girls” succeeded in both careers and life. Mum’s hands were never idle; she spent countless hours creating many beautiful crocheted items. She took great pride in her home and gardens and worked tirelessly on them. Mum had a very sharp mind and a keen interest in world affairs. Any visit with her was sure to include a political discussion. Education was extremely important to mum and she would always say, “Get an education; it is the one thing that can not be taken from you”. She leaves behind a legacy of many treasured memories and valuable lessons well taught.
Betty was predeceased by the love of her life, Jack, her parents Wilmot and Eleanor (West) Trevors, brothers George, Dudley, Alfred, Leonard, Ronald, Boyd, and Donald, sisters, Queenie, Eleanor, and Catherine.
Mum will be lovingly remembered by daughter Nancy Horne (David), granddaughter, Victoria Horne (Patrick), and great granddaughters Violet and Emily Whiting, nephew Frederick Matchett and special niece Faye Matchett who assisted mum in ways too numerous to mention.
Memorial donations to the I.W.K. Health Centre, Halifax would honour Mum’s profound love of children.
Private family burial to occur at a later date.
