  • Ella Rosalie Mountain Curtis, wife of the late Byron Curtis, formerly of Gray Rapids, NB, passed away at the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home, on Sunday, November 17, 2019. She was 96.
    Ella was born on February 22, 1923 to Freeman and Ethel (Crocker) Mountain and was the last remaining member of her immediate family.
    She is survived by her 3 children – daughter Patricia Curtis and husband Brian Weaver, her son, Peter Curtis, and daughter Nancy Curtis and husband Robert Steeves, 5 grandchildren Andrew Munroe, Kathryn Weaver-Bennett and husband Richard Weaver-Bennett, Erin Bowlen, Ashley Curtis and Justin Curtis, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
    Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Robert, Eric and Shirley Mountain.
    After graduation, Ella joined the RCAF Women’s Corp and served as an Aircraft Recognition Instructor during WWII. One of her highlights during this time was going to New York City and seeing Frank Sinatra.
    Besides raising her family, she taught elementary school, adult literacy and mentored children with their reading. Ella lead a CGIT group, was a member of the United Church Women, Historical Society, St. John Ambulance, Credit Union and Royal Canadian Legion Branch #49 where she was the first female bartender. She helped organize several Crocker and Mountain family reunions, attended the 55th anniversary of the Liberation of Holland with her husband where she addressed the guests and lit the eternal flame. In her eighties, she travelled with her children to numerous European and Caribbean countries. She lived a full life right to the end.
    The family would like to thank all the staff of the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home for all the care and attention mom/mum received during her 6 years. She truly loved her time there.
    The funeral will be held on Thursday, November 21 at 1 PM at St. Andrew’s United Church, Blackville with a reception to follow in the Hall.
    Please note: All Legion Members are asked to please meet no later than 12:15 pm for a Legion Service at 12:30 pm.
    In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to the Andrew Munroe Trust Fund during the reception.
