  • Freda Elizabeth Ethel (McAllister) Silliker, passed away at home on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at the age of 78.

    Born in Newcastle, she was the daughter of the late Freeman and Mary (Walsh) McAllister. She was a sibling of 15 sisters and brothers, and grew up in Bridgetown, NB.
    Freda worked for Harry Fransblow during school years, and was married in 1961. Due to work shortage, they moved to Fredericton in 1965. Freda worked on UNB Campus, then onto University Foods. Upon returning to Newcastle in the 70’s, and with her four children, she went painting, housecleaning, babysitting, etc.
    With her children grown and out on their own, Freda volunteered for 15 years with Big Brothers & Big Sisters; Bowl for Kids, Festival of Trees, The Cottage, and the Senior Citizen’s Club in Sunny Corner. She was also a member of the Roman Catholic Church and the Islandview Senior Citizens Club.

    Freda leaves behind her daughter Corinne "Sam" Nolan of Miramichi; two sons Greg Nolan of Hanover, ON, and John Nolan of Kitchener, ON; daughter-in-law Corrina Smith; eight sisters Anna Guitard (Late Gus) of South Esk, Janice Dutcher (Eddie) of South Esk, Susan Sherrard (Late Byron) of Whitney, Cathy Somers (Terry) of South Esk, Helen Gibbs (Brian) of Miramichi, Betty Henderson (Randy) of Miramichi, Loretta McAllister of Miramichi, and Theresa McAllister of Miramichi; two brothers Art (Carol) of C.I. Road and Paul of Miramichi; Brothers-in-law Pat Nolan of Miramichi and Jack Silliker (Eleanor) of Hampton; sister-in-law Patricia Porter (Paul) of Rowena; three grandchildren Jared Nolan, Julie Nolan, and Jordan Nolan; and several nieces and nephews.

    Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Blaine Silliker; son Richard Nolan; Father of her four children Ernest Nolan; sisters Mary Lawlor (Late Ned), Diane Kazamer (Late Mike), and Fern Hare (Late Sandy); brother Hubert McAllister (Late Marie); and brother-in-law Gary Silliker.

    The family received relatives and friends at Northumberland Funeral Home & Crematorium on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 from 2 to 4 pm & 6 to 9 pm. The funeral service was held at St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church, in Red Bank, on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at 2 pm, with Father Dan Melanson officiating. St Thomas Church Choir led the congregation in the singing of the hymns "Here I Am Lord", "The Lord is My Shepherd", "Peace is Flowing like a River", "Be Not Afraid", "Songs of the Angels", and "Lord Help Me Jesus". The eulogy was given by Sheree Allison, and readings were done by her sisters Cathy Somers, Anna Guitard, and Loretta McAllister. Interment will take place in the church cemetery at a later date.

    As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Big Brothers & Big Sisters Club, or to Saint Thomas Roman Catholic Church.
