Grethe Signe Jessen

Grethe Signe Jessen (Udesen) was born in Vejle, Denmark, on May 10, 1926, and died July 4, 2024, at Losier Hall, in Miramichi, at the age of 98.

Grethe loved to knit and was an avid reader. She married a Viking (July 1947) who loved to travel, so with three small children she followed him to Canada in 1957. They lived in Quebec, tried to learn French, then to Sault St. Marie, learned English and were joined by her parents from Denmark. Esther was born in Sault St. Marie and they moved to Winnipeg for some 21 years. They then followed their son Fred and family to Miramichi, NB, in 1981. Due to several strokes, she spent her last years in first Mt Saint Joseph Nursing Home, then to Losier Hall. She came to think of the staff as family.

Her life was busy, but her greatest love was the truth she learned from the bible as one of Jehovah's Witnesses (baptized in 1939). She loved the promise Revelation 21: 3,4 where "death and pain would be no more." When she could talk, she shared that promise with everyone who would allow her. She did not fear death, but was comforted in the promise of a resurrection to a paradise earth.

She was predeceased by her husband Reinholdt (December 2015); brothers Axel (Denmark), and Christian (England).

She is survived by her sister Elsa Markevich (Sherbrooke); her children, Karen (Hunter) Paul, Fred (Katherine), and Esther; grandchildren Jason (Hunter), Joanne (Valdez), Candice (Lou Totino) Sonya, Caitlyn (Matthew Kalichuk), Nils (Brittani), and Lars (Rachel); several great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and zoom hook up will take place on July 20, 2024, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1040 King George Hwy., Miramichi, NB, at 2:00 PM Atlantic time.
