It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jon Harold Thomas on Monday, October 30, 2023, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Halifax NS, with his family and close friends by his side.
Jon was born in Scarborough, Ontario to Norman and Margaret (Peg Fletcher) Thomas.
Jon leaves behind his loving sons Cole (Abby) and Jesse Thomas; father Norman Thomas; siblings Laura (Court), Scott, Norman, Michael, David (Carolyn) Thomas; Angela (Cole and Jesse’s mother); Billie and Garrett. Along with his loving aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Jon was predeceased by his mother Peg (Fletcher) Thomas and brother Mark Thomas.
Jon spent most of his time growing up throughout Ontario and settled in Richmond Hill, Ontario. It is here that Jon made lifelong friendships, honed his hockey skills and had the BEST family vacations. Jon loved to reminisce about the many adventures of the “Thomas kids” and “The Boys”. Jon graduated from Seneca College where he studied Golf Course Technology and furthered his education in Turf Management at Perdue University and other schools. It was at this time that his love of the game and career began and continued while working at Glen Abbey Golf Club, Oakville, ON and Miramichi Golf and Country Club, Miramichi NB.
Jon’s last 20 years working were spent in St. Andrews, NB as Superintendent at the Algonquin Golf Course. A self proclaimed “farmer”, Jon’s keen eye and passion for the beautification of this seaside course, was obvious! The pride Jon had as he mentored those beginning a career in the field was loved and appreciated by many over the years. It was during this time that close friendships and special bonds were formed.
Jon’s goal upon retirement in 2021 was to return to Miramichi to spend time with his beloved sons Cole and Jesse. He had close family ties with his “outlaws” as he called them, especially his second parents, Joan and Ken Cripps, often attending family events and card games. He fit right in with many old and new friends, especially at “The Shed”. Jon was an avid reader and was especially proud of his Stephen King collection and could rhyme off lines from movies and books with ease. He loved to golf with the boys and enjoyed just hanging out. Jon’s wit and sense of humor will be missed by all.
We would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of the Cardiac Care Unit and the Physiotherapy Department at the QEII Hospital for their expertise and care.
Arrangements are entrusted to Northumberland Funeral Home & Crematorium, 102 Pleasant St, Miramichi NB. Telephone (506) 622-7741.
As per Jon’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral, only a celebration of life at “The Shed”, at a later date. Special notes or memories can be left in the online guest book and for those that wish, a donation can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of NB or charity of donor’s choice… or simply plant a tree in Jon’s memory to keep the beauty going with turf grass all around it!
