  • Lawrence J. Burns of Miramichi, NB, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 25, 2012 at the Miramichi Regional Hospital at the age of 80.

    Born on January 7, 1932 in Sillikers, NB, he was the eldest son of the late Walter and Catherine (Hyland) Burns. He is survived by his by his wife of 55 years, Shirley (Hubbard) Burns, his daughter, Lois (Kenny) Oldfield and two sons, Wayne (Darla) Burns and Paul (Paula) Burns all of Miramichi; four grandchildren, Cathy (Paul) Wallace of Fredericton, NB, Larry (Crystal) Burns of Brooklin, ON, Michael Burns and Erin Burns both of Miramichi; and one great grandchild, Jonathan Wallace “The Little Fellow”. As well, he is survived by four sisters, Helene McIntyre of Miramichi, Mabel Dodds of London, ON, Monica Hovey of Plaster Rock, NB and Anna Curtis of Moncton, NB; three brothers, William (Rose Marie) Burns and Leo Burns both of Miramichi, and Donald (Joan) Burns of Sillikers and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four brother-in-laws and one sister-in-law.

    Lawrence worked in the logging and mining industry prior to becoming a member of the Newcastle Police Force in 1958. During his 32 years of dedicated police service, he made many friends and was a well-respected member of the community. For his dedicated service, Lawrence was awarded an honorary lifetime membership to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #10 in Miramichi. Following his retirement in 1990, Lawrence enjoyed spending his time hunting and fishing at the “Old House”, playing his fiddle, spending time with family and friends and socializing at Tim Hortons. Lawrence had a love for music and was a member of the Miramichi Fiddlers.

    Lawrence was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle. He was very proud of his family, especially his grandson and namesake for following his footsteps in becoming a police officer and his great grandson who shares his love of music and the violin.

    Lawrence will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind, loving and honest man, as well a great story teller.

    Visitation will be at Northumberland Funeral Home, 102 Pleasant Street, Miramichi, NB on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm and Wednesday, November 28, 2012 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 370 Newcastle Boulevard, Miramichi, NB on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 11:00 am with Father Dan Melanson officiating.

    In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lawrence may be made to the Miramichi Senior Citizen’s Home Adult Day Program or to a memorial of the donor's choice.
