  • Roy Kelly, passed away peacefully with family by his side Saturday, November 11, 2017 at St Anthony's Hospital in The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 63 years.
Leroy Francis Kelly was born Thursday, September 9, 1954 in Newcastle, NB to John Kelly and Mary (Carew) Kelly. He was the 6th of 12 children.
Roy learned through experience that having so many older brothers was character building. When he learned he was going to be a big brother, he was excited to extend the older brother legacy. He swiftly learned that the rules are different for rough housing with little sisters when the first girl arrived.
Growing up, Roy spent a lot of time helping out at the family run candy store. Being located near several schools, the store was such a popular joint that he often spent his time pulling out small children that were getting squashed in the crowds and sending them out through the kitchen.
Roy met the love of his life, Mary Lynn at a high school dance and they were smitten at first sight. He approached her and told her, "Let's get married, I have a priest right here.” She laughed then and they have been laughing together ever since.
They were married December 3, 1977. Mary Lynn moved to The Pas, MB to be with him while he worked at the pulp and paper mill.
Roy was a second class power engineer and he retired after 37 years in 2014.
Roy's favourite activities was to travel. He loved to experience new places for the first time, he loved the mountains and the oceans. One of his notable experiences is the story that he loved to tell of the time that he and a friend accidentally broke into a bank in Belgium.
Roy had a wonderful sense of humour and no one was safe in his presence.
Residents of The Pas may be relieved that they no longer find random items in their shopping carts. Small children won't have to worry about being scolded for sticking out their tongues at strangers uptown (when it was really Roy that instigated).
People visiting Roy's home or attending social events with him will no longer find their shoes tied together when they go to leave.
Roy loved being a grandfather. He and Dmitri spent lots of time playing hide and go seek, having water gun fights, chasing each other with snakes, playing Spider-man and bowling. Playtime was often followed by their favourite treat, ice cream.
Roy is survived by his wife Mary Lynn; daughter Nancy (Graham Smigelski); grandson Dmitri Smigelski; siblings Dan (Melissa), Ken (Diane), Steve (Cecile), Betty Ann (Kevin DeMerchant), Roger, Trudy (Joe Linscomb), Linda; sister-in-law Elizabeth; numerous nieces and nephews; and his mother-in-law Dawn Stewart.
Roy was predeceased by his daughter Sarah; his mother Mary; father John; brothers Pat, Terry, Brian, and Guy; as well as his father-in-law Ken.
In keeping with Roy’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will take place Friday, November 24, 2017, 1:00 pm, Royal Canadian Legion Hall, The Pas.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Pas Health Complex Foundation, Inc., Memorial Fund, Division, Box 541, The Pas, Manitoba, R9A 1K6 or to CancerCare Manitoba, ON1160 – 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E OV9, would be appreciated by Roy’s family.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Hemauer Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 122 Lathlin Ave, Box 416, The Pas, Manitoba (204) 623-3261
