Mary Rosella Doris Hartery

September 18, 1938 — April 4, 2025

Our dear mother, Rosella (Connell) Hartery of Newcastle, wife of the late Arthur William Hartery, passed away peacefully on Friday at the Miramichi Regional Hospital surrounded by her family. She had reached the tender age of 86.

Born in Chatham, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Benedict Theophilis Connell of Little Bartibog and Agnes Mary (Morrison) of Newcastle.

She was a homemaker for most of her life, raising nine children in our home on Lawlor Lane in Newcastle.

As a child, she began her education in a one-room schoolhouse close to the family home and completed her studies at Saint Mary’s Convent in Newcastle, building many lifelong friendships along the way. She began her career conducting clerical work at numerous locations in Newcastle, concluding her early employment at the Northumberland Co-op where she met our father: the love of her life. They were married on May 19, 1959.

Mom was passionately dedicated to her family and her church. As a devoted follower of the teachings of Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys she was an active member of the Congregation of Notre-Dame Associates. Other religious involvements at St. Mary’s Church included the Catholic Women’s League (CWL), the bereavement committee, and the prayer shawl ministry.

She always enjoyed playing cards with her friends and, for many years, participated in a weekly card club playing Forty-Five’s.

Despite her kids growing up and moving to all parts of the country, she insisted to being on location for every special event in their lives and those of her grandchildren – much to the chagrin of our father, who resolved to driving her everywhere due to his fear of flying. When she was not arranging her next road trip she would often be found knitting, writing poetry, playing bingo, and making the delicious homemade bread and pickles she shared with everybody who stopped in.

Mom will be greatly missed by her children Dolan (late Mary) of Ottawa, Gary (Peggy) of Ottawa, Kevin (Patsy) of Saskatoon, Cindy Young (Art) of Miramichi, Paul of Ottawa, Michael of Saint John, Brian (Kim) of Trout Brook, Debbie Rauwerda (Don) of Virginia ON, and David of Wynard SK; her siblings Ann Russell (late Fred), Arlene Black (Buddy), Walter Connell (Marilyn), Lee Connell (Brenda), and Fred Connell (Doris); her fourteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. We were always in her heart; the words ‘I love you and am so proud of you’ were never far from her lips.

Besides her parents and husband, Mom is predeceased by her brothers James and David Connell (late Irene), grandchild Caelan Hartery, and brother-in-law Fred Russell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church, on Friday, April 11, 2025, at 2 pm, with Father Cornelius Ngurukwem S.M.M.M. officiating. Interment will take place in the church cemetery at a later date.

A special thank you to Mom’s friend Laurie Conolly and all the other KRT caregivers involved in her care and to all the staff at Losier Hall that made her feel more at home.

As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to Miramichi Accessible Transit or to the Losier Hall entertainment and leisure programs.
