Melvin Orreville Boland, of Miramichi, passed away on Monday, January 17, 2011, at the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home, at the age of 85.

Born in Englehart, Ontario, he was the son of the late James and Ellen (Watt) Boland. He worked as a professional engineer and also a teacher. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a life member of Bancroft Curling Club and Bancroft Lions Club. Melvin was an avid fisherman and spent his summers canoeing and fishing in the lakes of Algonquin Provincial Park.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Lois (Matchett) Boland , of Miramichi; daughter Vera Carter (George) of Omemee, ON; son James (Lynn) of Markham, ON; sisters Ellen Hutt of Calgary AB, Avril Mills of Englehart, ON, Margaret Smith (Milfred) of Hamilton, ON, Gladys Bradley of Ottawa, ON, Olive Matthie of Hamilton, ON, and Barbara Hildebrand of Greenwood, NS; two grandsons Graham and Eric Boland; one great grandchild; two stepsons Robert Fogan of Ahmerst, NS, and Ian Fogan of Saint John, NB; one stepdaughter Tina Kennedy of Cape Breton, NS; eight step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters Jean Bowen and Ruby Carmichael, and one brother Donald Boland.

The family will receive relatives and friends from Northumberland Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, January 19, 2011, from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held from Northumberland Funeral Home Chapel, on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 10:30 am.

As expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Miramichi Senior Citizen’s Home, or to a memorial of one’s choice.
