Mrs. Bernadette Zigante, of South Esk, passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Friday December 14, 2007 at the age of 71.
She was the daughter of the late Frederic and Philomene (Jeanson) Perras. She served with the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1956 to 1961. She was the first female police officer in Saint John New Brunswick. She worked as a police constable from 1962 – 1973. In 1995 she was inducted to the New Brunswick Women’s Hall of Fame for this great achievement.
She is survived by two daughters Nina Zigante (Gregory Stewart) of South Esk. and Michelle (Claude Connors) of Fredericton; two sisters Clair Gagon (Harvey) of Granby P.Q., Denise Perras of Granby P.Q.; three brothers Amede Perras (Rita), Claude Perras (Lorraine) and Louis Perras (Rita) all of Waterloo P.Q.; three grandchildren Alexandra and Francesca Stewart and Addison Connors. She was predeceased by sisters Deneige and Helene and brother’s Lucien and Andre.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on Wednesday December 19, 2007 from St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Red Bank at 11am with Father Dan Melanson officiating. As expression of sympathy donations may be made to Miramichi Food Bank. The funeral arrangements are in the care of Northumberland Funeral Home, 102 Pleasant St., telephone 622-7741.
