The death of Rev. William Weiss, a priest of the Diocese of Saint John, occurred at the Upper River Valley Hospital, Waterville, NB, on Monday, October 15, 2018, at the age of seventy-seven. Father Weiss was born in Philadelphia, PA, on November 17, 1940.
After studying in local schools, Father Bill worked in Philadelphia for several years before becoming part of a musical and dance troupe touring the United States. He eventually came to New York where he continued his theatrical work in a number of plays, including West Side Story. An interest in the priesthood eventually led him to Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, CN, where he met several seminarians from the Diocese of Saint John. He was ordained a priest for the Society of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles on August 22, 1984. Soon after he came to the Diocese of Saint John to temporarily replace one of his classmates. While here, he was invited to serve in the Diocese. That invitation led to Father Bill giving the rest of his life to the Diocese, first as a missionary of the Holy Apostles and later as an incardinated priest. Father Bill served a number of years at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and in Saint John area nursing homes. After that he served in Holy Trinity Parish, Saint John, St. Augustine’s Parish, Grand Bay-Westfield, St. Francis Xavier Parish, Sussex, St. Raphael’s Parish, Blackville, Sts. Simon and Jude Parish, Nackawic, and St. Gertrude’s Parish, Woodstock. Father then returned to Saint John where he served as Pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish and Stella Maris Parish. From there he went to St. Stephen’s Parish, St. Stephen. He finished his ministry back at the Cathedral and then retired to Woodstock. Father Bill was a well loved priest, known for his kindness to everyone and especially for those who struggled. May he rest In peace.
Father Bill is survived by his sisters Jeanette Brophy and Mary Ann Huff, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. Father’s remains will rest in St. Gertrude’s Church, Woodstock; on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Vespers will be held in the Church Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 am followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woodstock.
