  • Mrs Sophia Katherine Kenny of Bartibogue Bridge NB passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at the age of 90. She was born April 24, 1919 in Brethour, Temiskaming Township, Ontario, the daughter of Ukrainian immigrants, Anthony Josefowich and
Stephanie Hrynewicz. Sophia left the family farm at the age of 17 to seek her fortune, working first in the mining towns and summer resorts of the north. Later she was employed at the International Silver Company in Hamilton ON, leaving there to enlist in the Canadian Woman’s Army Corps in 1943.

Sophia was extremely proud of having served her country during World War II, and it was while she was stationed at Saint John NB that she met her future husband, Arthur G Kenny, who was also stationed there in the RCA Ordnance Corps. They were married April 7, 1945 and after the War they settled at Bartibogue Bridge where they raised five children.

Over the years Sophia has had many interests, primarily the activities and accomplishments of her family, but also her prize-winning flower garden, and many hobbies including home decorating, sewing, crocheting, hooking rugs, antique collecting, furniture finishing, landscape painting and carpentry. Although she had limited formal schooling, Sophia never stopped learning, reading books and magazines all her life. She was a great traveller, touring Canada, England and Europe, and spending winters in Portugal, Nigeria and California. Her greatest joy however, was in the telling of stories and jokes. At family gatherings, her robust laughter could always be heard over the din of conversation.

She will be greatly missed by her daughters Glendene Reid of Shemogue NB and Pamela (Ben) Kenna of Russellville; sons Elliot (Janis) of Chaplin Is Rd; Thomas (Beverly) of Douglastown; Daniel (Della) of Ottawa, ON; grandchildren Tania (Phil) Taekema, Logan Kenna, Jeffrey Kenny, Amanda Weston, Tyson Kenny, Dylan Kenny, Garett Kenny, Matthew Kenny, and Morgan Kenny; and great-grandchildren Dael, Holland, and Beck Taekema.

She also leaves behind five sisters: Mary Beeley, North Bay ON, Stephanie (Steve) Luby, Hamilton ON, Julie Wells, Timmins ON, Jean Geluch, Burnaby BC, Millie (Terry) O’Connor, London ON; sister-in-laws Edie Josefowich, Bernice Savage, and Marie Savage; two brothers: Ted (Norma) Josefowich and Dan (Elsie) Josefowich, both of North Bay ON; as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada and the US.

Sophia was predeceased by her husband Arthur in 1984; grand-daughter, Tara Prokosh in 1986; sisters Rose Chulumovich, Ann Chidester and Helen Furlotte; brothers Joseph, Alex, Mike, Tom, and an infant brother Sam.

Sophia will be cremated and her remains will be resting at Northumberland Funeral Home, Miramichi West with visitation from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Friday 5 February. Funeral services will held at 11 am. Saturday 6 February at Sts.Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, Bartibogue Bridge, with Reverand Leon Creamer officiating. Interment will be in the spring at St George’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Covedell NB.
